Could it possibly be this early navigation head unit with a tape deck?

Check this shit out. It's off of a 2002 Jeep WJ Overland

When I got my E39 M5, it came with a big screen for the nav. On the upper right corner there's an eject button.
"Hmm, what does this eject? CD? Where's the CD?"
Well the screen folds down and reveals a tape deck. On a 2003 model car that was the most bad-ass high-end sport saloon of it's time. Really?

Blaupunkt's radios of the 70s and 80s. Particularly models like this "berlin" or equalizers like the ones below.

I've actually still got one of these bad boys in my daily driver... Getting map updates is a pita, but lets be honest, smartphones are better at NAV than any OEM built in nav unit these days.

Is that a cover/knockout for a 3.5" floppy drive?
![]() 02/13/2014 at 23:25 |

Ah but when it was built there were no fancy smartphones

Why is this upside down?!? Turn it please!

My dad has the same car and it didn't go well when we tried to put in a cassette to mp3 device

If that's a floppy drive it earns 736 hipster points because, you know, 736 is a pretty random number.

Also, the vents don't look perfectly aligned. :/

Yeah, I wouldn't think that would go well. Especially when the screen closes.
Though a tape adapter might sound better that my stupid MediaBridge. My iPod sounds like crap.

can't be all that retro, it appears to have an ipod holder

This was the thought process
1. This is a great idea
2. I'll just plop this in here
3. OH SWEET TAP DANCING JESUS I'M A DUMB ASS AND IT'S CLOSING
4. I'll just un-plop this from there

In the early '00s, I read in one of the car rags that luxury brands like BMW, MB, Lexus etc. kept equipping their cars with cassette decks because their wealthier customers wanted them in order to listen to books-on-tape.

I used to do the same thing in my Jeep! haha

Where else are you going plug this in so you can listen to your vinyl turntable on the passenger seat?

Isn't that just a trip computer?
My 996 has the top of the line factory stereo. It's useless and ridiculous, probably outdated instantly and very, very expensive. Crazy Porsche.

That might actually be it...holy shit I forgot about those. That's...awful.

Not compared to the latest systems from BMW and MB...I'll take a nice big 12" HD display with gorgeous 3D maps compared to staring down into my crotch/getting stupid tickets from over-zealous cops. But that was true up till recently.
![]() 02/16/2014 at 16:48 |

So...did they actually want you to see the display or did they just forget half of it?

It's more of an informal challenge to get where you are going issued by Chrysler engineers.

The OEM systems are great until you 1) need to update them ($$$), 2) need a NAV outside of your own car (traveling, biking, running), or 3) want to have your co-pilot diddle the NAV while you are moving.
GoogleMaps. Is ri-ding-dong-diculously good for whatever I need, including 3D maps (which I never use, but it can do that, too), traffic avoidance, multi-destination trips, auto-dimming at twilight and in tunnels, and more... My LG G2 has a 5.2" screen which is more than adequate for navigation, and it mounts nicely in an exomount clip between the a-pillar and dash in my line of sight and doesn't block my view.
To each his own.

I mean I have G Maps on my phone, I love it. But its nice to have something that's totally integrated into the car, and is connected to all the systems, that I don't have to fiddle with.

Lol I feel like that's literally what would happen. You aren't going anywhere with that tiny shit.
